The Age of Disruption

Vielleicht wird man unsere Zeit einmal als das Age of Disruption bezeichnen, so wie der Historiker Eric Hobsbawn das 20. Jahrhundert als das Age of Extremes bezeichnet hat. Disruptiv zu sein zählt zum Kernbestand der ‚kalifornischen Ideologie‘ im Silicon Valley. Das disruptive Subjekt schlechthin ist der Unternehmer, seit Schumpeter als Agent schöpferischer Zerstörung adressiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund überraschte es nicht, dass der deutschstämmige Investor Peter Thiel, der durch PayPal und Facebook zum Milliardär wurde, Donald Trump im Wahlkampf unterstützte. Beide teilen eine radikale Politikverachtung. Sie wollen change – aber nicht wie Obama als inkrementelle Verbesserung des Gemeinwohls im Rahmen respektierter Institutionen, sondern als ebenso einschneidenden wie leeren Bruch, bei dem Einzelne selbst dafür sorgen müssen, dass sie unbeschadet davonkommen.

Desinteresse an der Wahrheit, offenkundig haltlose Versprechungen, Unbeherrschtheit und rohe Gewalt werden, wie Andrew Sullivan bereits am 2. Mai im New York Magazine schrieb, zu „symbols of a new way of conducting politics. Their very impossibility is their appeal.“ Sullivan erkannte früher als alle anderen, was den Kern der Trump-Kandidatur ausmachte:

„Trump is not just a wacky politician of the far right, or a riveting television spectacle, or a Twitter phenom and bizarre working-class hero. He is not just another candidate to be parsed and analyzed by TV pundits in the same breath as all the others. In terms of our liberal democracy and constitutional order, Trump is an extinction-level event.“

Donald Trump ist der disruptor-in-chief. Was das im günstigsten Fall bedeutet, hat Fred Turner, Kulturhistoriker aus Stanford, mit seiner Beschreibung des Disruptionsdenkens schon lange vor der Wahl und ganz unabhängig davon auf den Punkt gebracht:

„If you imagine yourself as a disruptor than you don’t have to imagine yourself as a responsible builder. You don’t have to imagine yourself as a member, as a citizen, as an equal. You’re the disruptor, your job is to disrupt, and do whatever it takes to disrupt. Your job is not to help build the state, build the community, build the infrastructure that made your life possible in the first place.“

Was es im schlimmsten Fall bedeutet, mag man sich gar nicht ausmalen.
